June 15, 2010

Mrs Edwina Hart AM
Minister for Health and Social Services
Welsh Assembly Government
Cathays Park
Cardiff CF10 3NQ
Wales

Dear Minister,

I am writing to you as chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction. We are based at the Westminster Parliament and also have supporters in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The APPG was set up to raise awareness and lobby for support from health service providers, local authorities and government for those suffering from involuntary tranquilliser addiction. I met with the new Health Minister Anne Milton MP on 2 June 2010 to discuss this issue and the continuing review by her department of policy on addiction to prescribed medication. I was very pleased to hear that you have commissioned research in Wales into addiction to benzodiazepines and Z drugs.

I shall be grateful if you will provide me with the terms of reference of the research and any other available information. Can you also confirm the expected date of publication for the report and what opportunity there will be for members of the public and the APPG to comment on the report?

I am in full support of this very important project, and if the APPG can be of any assistance to you in this matter please contact my office.

Kind regards

Jim Dobbin MP
